Dairy farmers from Nyamira County will be selling their milk with ease after the government announced plans to launch a milk processing plant in the county.
This comes after a feasibility study that was conducted by a South African Based Company (Afrikaners Milk Group) following an agreement with the county government.
Speaking at a function in the county headquarters, the governor Mr John Nyagarama said the official launching of the company will take place during the World Food Celebration on October 15 at Rigoma grounds in Kitutu Masaba.
He said this was aimed at moving the county to an agribusiness hub by empowering dairy, fruits and tea farmers.
“I am happy to announce that our dairy farmers will no longer sell their products to companies outside this county. We have held successful negotiations with a foreign investor and we will launch a factory in Kitutu Masaba,” he said.
He said the company will minimise production expenses by cutting transportation cost imposed by companies collecting milk from the region.
“Our farmers are exploited by local vendors especially from the neighbouring counties (Bomet and Kericho) but I am happy that transportations cost will be minimised substantially because the company will be within the county,” he added.
He said his government was in talks with other potential investors to boost fruit farmers by launching another company to help localise their production.
“Let it be known that this is an agribusiness county and we will take an opportunity of ensuring all famers are properly guided. We will have more companies that will purchase and process produces within the county and may be next fruit farmers will be on the list,” he said.
