Retired President Daniel Moi has blamed an irresponsible society and a get rich faster mentality for the rot being witnessed.

Speaking at the AIC Kabarak community church in Nakuru on Sunday, Moi took issue with the reports on different media channels where youths across the country are being associated with sex, drug abuse and hooliganism at institutions of higher learning arguing that the solution lies with everybody in the society.

He accuses parents and caretakers who are too pre occupied in making money at the expense of family time which he says makes young people experiment for themselves wrongly.

“As a parent, you are the first teacher and role model to your child, if you abscond your duty then your child becomes wayward, blame yourself,” Moi told reporters after attending a church service.

The former head of state expressed concern at the moral decay being witnessed in the youthful generation saying that something had to be done before things got out of control.

“We cannot sit back and watch our future generation engage in uncouth behaviour like nobody cares, it’s our responsibility to instil what is positive in them,” he advised.

This comes in the wake of reports that more than 500 school-going children were arrested in a sex and drug abuse orgy at a club in Eldoret town while in Kisumu, eight students; five girls and three boys, were arrested after cohabiting for a month at Lolwe estate.

Moi called for good parenting which he said was instrumental for a healthy and prosperous future for the country.

“Kenya is our nation which we must strive to protect at all times, assuming our teenagers or teaching them bad behaviour at a tender age is dangerous because what we are seeing them engage in is sad,” he added.

A United Nations report commissioned in 2014 indicate that 6 out of 10 school going children engage in sex and use drugs something the former president insists must be wiped out.
