The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) has been urged to consider a possible merger ahead of 2017 polls to avoid cut-throat competition among the affiliate parties at the grassroots.

Senator Mong’are Okong’o said this on Sunday evening at Dam Side Hotel in Borabu constituency when he met a section of youth from Nyamira.

He said the intention to merge all the parties would provide a platform for the parties to garner a majority in both houses (Senate and National Assembly) and the county assemblies in order to have a stable government if they win.

“I want to advise Cord leadership to dissolve affiliate parties to come up with a formidable party that can help us win the election. The party will also avoid cut-throat competitions at the grassroots among people from affiliate parties that will jeopardise our chances of claiming a simple majority in all houses,” he said.

The Ford-Kenya senator said he will raise the issue with the party leadership during a retreat scheduled for early November for further discussion.

“As Cord, we believe in freedom of speech and I think that is purely my opinion, to ensure we control all houses; be it Parliament or county assemblies,” he said.

Mong’are urged the youth to rally behind the coalition and challenged them to go for elective posts in 2017 polls.

“I want to urge all of you to remain solid and focused in the coalition. We have the future by turning this nation to a country of opportunities. You also have a chance of contesting in elections,” he said.
