A Kisumu court on Monday sentenced a 40-year-old mother to 6 months in jail after being found guilty of assaulting his 6-year-old son.
The accused, Maryanne Ombola denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Esther Maina and was given an alternative fine of Sh15, 000.
Giving the sentence, Maina said that it was clear that the accused had been assaulting her own child over petty issues and the court was justified to punish her as an example to other parents with similar behaviour.
The court heard that Ombola a resident of Kisumu was reported by her neighbours in Mamboleo area to the police for assaulting is son to a point of him being admitted in hospital.
The alleged assault is said to have taken place on December 24, 2014. The court also heard that the accused assaulted the boy for stealing Sh100 from her purse.
The matter was investigated by police from Mamboleo who resolved that Ombola had a case to answer. Her son was discharged after three days after he was treated of head and arm injuries at the New Nyanza General Hospital.
In her defence Ombola said that she did not intend to harm her son to that extent saying she was trying to discipline him.
