The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) plans to set up a facility in the institution to cater for lactating women visiting the facility and employees.

This is a move by the hospital to increase the percentage of women breastfeeding in the county  from the current 61 percent.

Speaking to the press after launching the World Breastfeeding week 2015, Dr Francis Ogalo said that the facility will help enhance the time given for women to breastfeed their babies and improve their health.

He said that one major reason why women are not breastfeeding their babies enough is because they fear doing so in public. He said that this facility would help solve the situation as it will be specifically for breastfeeding women.

“Women don’t breastfeed their Children enough especially because they fear being seen in public. Some feel their children are so little to be seen in public. Others are too shy. This facility will help give some privacy to the women," he said.

Ogalo also said the facility would also act in the future as a daycare centre for children whose mothers work in the hospital. This he said would enhance the time between mother and child and also help mothers breastfeed their children continuously for at least two years.
