National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) chairman John Mututho has asked the government to take legal action against counties that issued alcoholic manufacturing licenses to brewers.
Speaking on Tuesday in Nakuru Town where he revoked all licenses issued by the counties, Mututho said the licenses are supposed to be issued by NACADA and the counties were not mandated to do so.
He appealed to the Attorney General Githu Muigai to intervene in the matter and ensure such counties are charged.
“Their mandate should be to issue business licenses and permits only. The liquor manufacturing process is unknown to them. In fact, how would they know what kind of alcohol was good for consumption. Would they know the right quality or the right ingredients for the brews,” he said.
He called for the investigation of such industries in Nakuru and also promised to sue all the second generation liquor manufacturing companies for Sh30billion.
“They are responsible for the deaths of more than 300 Kenyans and we are already compiling our own data. We will soon go to court on a pro bono basis seeking to have the families compensated. Many of the deaths were caused by consumption of the poisonous drinks which are not fit for human consumption,” said Mututho.
