NACADA has launched an immediate rehabilitation program for alcoholics who are suffering from withdrawal symptoms. NACADA CEO, William Okedi identified Nairobi, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Murang’a, Nyeri, Laikipia, Nakuru and Nyandarua as the most affected by this crisis.
In a press release, Okedi claimed that NACADA will also expand this country wide.
"We are collaborating with Ministry of Health and County Governments to pitch tents in Sub-county Hospitals to conduct assessments and screening of persons experiencing withdrawal symptoms, offer detoxification and psychosocial treatment." said Okedi.
He pointed out that the board will offer individual and group counselling to persons with substance use disorders and their families at identified sites.
"We have started working with county directors of Alcoholic Drinks Control Boards and County Executives for Health in conducting drug prevention education in learning institutions and to youth out of school. In addition we are identifying civil society groups with whom to offer community-based outreach and advocacy on alcohol and drug abuse." he cited.
According to Okedi, they will also start working with faith based institutions, mainly mainstream churches, towards establishing support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous for recovering alcoholics. NACADA Chairman, John Mututho cited that they had started generating referrals to to accredited treatment and rehabilitation centers as well as County Referral Hospitals to those who require medical assistance.
"NACADA will collaborate with the National Youth Service (NYS) so as to build the capacity of their key staff with addiction counseling skills. We will also support and strengthen County Governments to develop alcohol and drug abuse policies, as well as design and implement interventions at the county, sub-county and ward levels."said Mututho in a phone interview
