The county government of Nakuru has been asked to commit more resources into the welfare of people living with HIV/Aids.

This comes after it emerged that Nakuru County is among the leading counties with the highest numbers of people affected by virus.

Speaking in an interview, the secretary of the of an organisation caring for people living with HIV/Aids in Nakuru county, James Wanyoike stressed that much needs to be done to fight the disease in the county after it was ranked seven among counties that are most affected by the virus.

“As a matter of fact with regard to HIV/Aids our county is not doing very well. When we look at the Kenya aids revolution Roadmap which is a document by the Kenyan Government it quotes Nakuru at position Seven when it comes to counties with the highest burden of new infection,” he said.

Wanyoike says since 2000 the number of people infected with the virus has steadily increased and claimed that majority of those seeking Anti-retroviral drugs in public hospitals are sometimes forced to go home empty-handed.

“It’s quite unfortunate that we are talking about these figures, by 2011 we were talking about 60,000 people living with HIV, but as we speak today the number is at around 80,000 those who have been tested alone. So we have a high number of people living with HIV in the county, people who need treatment," he added.

He urged the county government to prioritise the health sector to ensure that residents have access to better services.
