Police in Nakuru over the weekend recovered stolen electronic items estimated at Sh500,000 from suspected robbers at Kiamunyi estate in the outskirts of Nakuru town.
The goods, which mainly comprised TV sets, gas cylinders, water dispensers and music systems, were recovered by police officers attached to Kiamunyi chief’s camp following a tip off by the residents.
Area chief Wilson Maraga said the three suspects, among them a dealer in a gas filling station, were captured after they were found handling the stolen property.
“The three were arrested Saturday morning and will be held in custody to assist the police with investigations,” said Maraga.
He told journalists that the goods were recovered at rental houses in Nakuru’s Section 58, Langalanga and Salama estates where they were hidden.
The chief praised residents for working closely with the police and encouraged them to embrace the Nyumba Kumi initiative to further deal with crime in the area.
He said the community policing initiative would help to reduce break-in incidents common in the area.
Mr Maraga also asked the government to deploy more police officers to the area to curb increasing insecurity which he attributed to the increasing population.
Area residents who spoke to reporters said the frequent break-ins have caused fear and insecurity in the area.
“We hardly sleep in this area, robbers have been breaking into our houses before they make away with household items,” said John Kimotho, a resident.
The three are suspected to be part of a wider cartel that steals and trades the items in far-flung areas.
