A section of politicians opposed to the controversial Uganda sugar deal have been challenged to reveal facts about the identities of individuals running sugar cartels in the country.

The chairman of the Kenya National Trading Corporation (KNTC), Peter Kinya claimed that despite the fact that sugar barons are well known by the politicians, they are reluctant to reveal them to aid in creating measures to curb the vice.

He said the only way that the sugar industry in the country could be revived effectively is by revealing those who import sugar into the country illegally.

“There are many cartels and politicians know them, these are the people who bring excess sugar though either through Mandera to Nairobi and we have also got sugar brought in through other borders packaged as local brands,” he said.

He said the government should not be blamed for seeking sugar from Uganda saying the shortage needed to be addressed.

The KNTC chairman insisted that a section of politicians is aware of the identities of the supposed sugar barons.

“What we need in this country is to make sure that these cartels which bring the illegal sugar through our borders are destroyed," he added.

He was speaking on Wednesday in Nakuru town.
