The Kenya National Library Service plans to set up a national virtual library in the next 2 years to make it easier for people to access books.
The Director of the library service Richard Atuti said that Kenyans will now read books on computers and mobile devices regardless of their location.
“This will be the game changer since it will connect books to readers easily in a platform where all the electronic information will be shared,” he said.
He also said that another advantage of using a virtual library is that it is able to store many books in a small amount of space and readers can access their entire personal libraries from one location.
Speaking in Kisumu on Monday where he was addressing the Government Librarians Association meeting, Atuti explained that the new system will solve the popular problem of lack of time to visit the libraries.
“Kenyans should read books and the new system has made it easier for anyone who is interested to read books to do so. Soon enough, no one will require to go to the library to access books,” he said.
Atuti further noted that the Library Service is equipping existing community libraries with books and has urged Kenyans to inculcate the culture of reading.
