The National Construction Authority (NCA) on Wednesday shut down 17 construction sites in Thika for flouting building regulations.
According to the NCA inspection team, the developers have not provided for with protective gear and the unfinished buildings have not been secured.
Isaiah Achini said the contractors holding the sites have been registered with the NCA but they have not met the requirements as stipulated in their registration forms.
Achini said that they had been informed of all the requirements before they were registered but most of them haven’t observed them.
“We had them go through our rules and regulations before they were registered and from our observation in Thika most of the contractors haven’t met these requirements in their construction sites,” Achini said.
The architect, who led a team of 13 inspectors through different construction sites in Thika, highlighted lack of signboards on their sites as one of the reasons of the shutting down of them.
He said that the signboards should be showing the construction firms undertaking construction activities on the site to enable them monitor buildings under construction by following those liable.
The building owners have 14 days to comply with the regulations or be taken to court. The crackdown moves to Ruiru, Juja, Kiambu and Lari sub-counties according to the team.
