The Nakuru County Public Service Board (NCPSB) on Wednesday could not avail documentation of interview proceedings of some employees who went through the board before they were hired.
While appearing before the public affairs committee at the county assembly headquarters, NCPSB chairperson Dr Waithanji Mutiti failed to prove the legality of more than 20 ward administrators recently deployed across the county.
"Some of the documents the committee needs are not accessible at the moment because we (NCPSB) have been locked out of our office premises because of rent arrears," Waithinji said.
But the Assembly speaker questioned why there was a disparity in the number of staff hired.
"Why did the board interview 55 applicants then later post 80 ward administrators. Where did the excess number come from?" wondered Speaker Susan Kihika who also doubles up as the committee's chairperson.
The committee was not convinced on the irregularities in the hiring and deployment of workers which according to the sitting members was weighing down the county's wage bill.
In his defence, the NCPSB chair assured of transparency and independence in the way they handled their affairs as a board, promising to elaborate on all pending matters next week.
There have been an office space problem at the assembly premises with a majority of county and constituency staff being forced out of their offices until the county rents alternative premises for them.
