Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a has launched an anti-illicit brew campaign that is set to spearhead the fight against illicit brews and alcoholism in the constituency.
Ng’ang’a has called for collaborative efforts in the fight against the illicit brew menace in Kiambu County in a bid to ensure by the end of the four day ultimatum given by President Kenyatta, there will no longer be brewing in the area.
Speaking to this writer in a phone interview on Thursday, the legislator said the fight against brewing has been ineffective due to lack of collaboration between the administration and the public.
She noted that only a few concerned people have been fighting the brews in the area thus taming the brewing and consumption of the illegal alcohol has been hard for them.
The lawmaker added that some of the local chiefs have been overpowered by brewers and cartels behind illegal drinks.
Ng’ang’a said the government should establish an agency that will be licensing bars as some county government officials could be issuing licenses to rogue operators.
She however said she will support the government efforts aimed at making Kiambu 'sober' adding that the illicit brew menace and sale of illegal drinks has tainted the image of the county.
