Female youth from Mavoko Sub-County have been cautioned against engaging in risky behaviour that expose there lives to danger.
The call was made on Friday by Rebecca Nzuki, chairperson of the Trust For Indigenous Culture and Health, Athi River branch.
Speaking to HiviSasa at her office in Athi River, Nzuki said abortion remains a major challenge to the girl child in Mavoko.
"A number of teenage girls from Mavoko engage in risky sexual behaviour and later conduct clandestine abortions to terminate the pregnancies," said Nzuki.
According to Nzuki, the vice was on the rise among teenagers of ages between 14 and 25 who engage in premarital sex while still in school or after completing their secondary education.
Nzuki said the majority is ignorant of their reproductive health and do not know consequences of conducting such abortions.
She said that the youth should be careful not to engage in unsafe sexual activities that can expose them to lots of challenges including sexually transmitted infections, HIV/Aids and unwanted pregnancies.
She says more awareness should be created while identifying abstinence as the best solution to the vice.
