Nakuru County Government has announced plans to table a bill in the county assembly that will impose a permanent ban on night fishing. According to the county’s Chief Agriculture Officer Purity Muritu, if the bill is passed into law it no fishing will be allowed from 6pm.

This comes after five fishermen died while fishing at night in Lake Naivasha.

"When we have this law in place, nobody will be allowed in the lake after 6pm," Muritu said on Tuesday at Lake Naivasha where rescue efforts to get the bodies of two fishermen who drowned on Sunday were still ongoing.

Speaking at the same time, Naivasha sub-county fisheries officer Mathew Ngila has imposed a temporary night fishing ban as well as to fishermen without life jackets.

"No fisherman including those who know how to dive will be allowed into the lake without life jackets. You will be arrested if found contravening this order", said Ngila. He added that fishing will only be allowed up to 5pm till further notice citing bad weather at the lake in the evenings as the cause of increased deaths.
