People residing on public land have been given a week’s ultimatum to vacate before stern action is taken on them, National Land Commission chairperson Mohammed Swazuri has said.

Speaking after completing a week-long tour in Nakuru County which saw the commission conduct site visits to public plots suspected to have been grabbed by private developers, Swazuri vowed to crack the whip if nothing is done by the end of the said period.

“We cannot sit and watch individuals grab public land then go unpunished. As a commission, we give them one week to vacate before we act,” Swazuri warned, adding that any private developer encroaching on public land and thinking that nothing will be done are cheating themselves.

He further noted that the commission had revoked all illegally acquired title deeds further issuing court sanctions to all the holders.

“There is no way the commission will side with anybody engaging in illegal business at the expense of the common mwananchi, if you are one of them; your days are over, rest assured that it’s a matter of time before the law follows its course,” the NLC boss cautioned on Saturday.

In Nakuru County, the commission is in the process of repossessing about 100 acres of grabbed land in different locations, but Swazuri expressed confidence that they will succeed in their mandate.
