Nyamira County Governor John Nyagarama has promised to build a modern market at Chepilat, in Borabu Sub County, as one way of reducing the high number of accidents witnessed along the road.
Speaking at Nyamaiya on Thursday, Nyagarama said that in a bid to avert future fatalities, the county government was set to build the market away from the road as a matter of priority.
Residents of Chepilat, a linear town on the Kisii-Kericho Highway, mainly carry out their business by the roadside, which exposes them to accidents, with the recent case claiming the lives of seven people.
During the incident, a transit lorry whose driver reportedly lost control rammed into members of the public by the road side on a busy market day at Chepilat, where seven people died on the spot.
The governor said that the county government was in the process of identifying to set up the market in order to decongest the normally busy highway.
Nyagarama further noted that availability of public land for utilities had been an issue, and appealed to the public to move in and collaborate with the county government with a view to identify land for construction of the market as a matter of urgency
