The county government of Nyamira has rolled out a major anti jigger campaign that targets infested people from all the five sub-counties, with public and private school students and Nyamira North sub-county residents being the first beneficiaries.
On Monday, a number of residents from Nyamaiya ward and Nyamusi region benefited from the exercise that targets over 2,000 families suspected to be fighting the vice.
The exercise, which was rolled out by the county’s first lady Naomi Nyagarama saw a number of children from private schools that are in session and area residents attend in large numbers.
Speaking during the exercise, Nyagarama urged residents to observe hygienic conditions in a bid to curb the vice that has reportedly led to escalating number of school drop outs.
“We want to reach over 2,000 families from the entire county, and I think this is attainable. Our people have been suffering from a vice that we can control and I want to ask them to maintain good hygiene wherever they stay,” she said.
She lauded the county assembly for factoring the jigger campaign in the budget of the executive, and thanked the Red Cross for helping execute the operation.
“I most sincerely want to thank the county government of Nyamira more especially the assembly for factoring the jigger campaign in this year’s financial year. Red Cross has also been helpful and i belief they will help us reach our targets,” she added.
Over 200 people from Nyamira North benefited from the exercise which is set to culminate in November at Manga sub-ounty.
