Police in Nyamira County on Tuesday arrested a man believed to be a member of a killer gang that has been terrorising residents of the county.

Police believe that the suspect is part of a gang that is hired to abduct, terrorise and kill people before dumping their bodies on roadsides or forests in the county.

Nyamira County police commander Mr Mwarungu Mwandoe said officers managed to arrest one suspect as his two accomplices managed to escape after they were stopped at a roadblock mounted at Ikonge. The criminals had dumped a body at Kerito Tea Estate in Nyamira County.

The suspects’ vehicle, which the three suspects were using to ferry the badly mutilated body, was soaked in blood. Police said a kitchen knife which was used to kill the deceased and blood soaked clothes were recovered from the vehicle.

Speaking at Nyamira police divisional headquarters, Mwandoe said that the suspects, who were travelling in a saloon car, approached a police road block at Ikonge. However, when they realised police had barricaded the road, they made u-turn and sped off.

He said that police officers, using motor bikes, chased the car. They caught up with it at Kerito Tea Estate where they had dumped the body of a man.

He said that after sensing that police were after them, the suspects jumped out of the car and disappeared into the forest.

The police boss said that his officers managed to arrest one suspect as the other two escaped into the thick forest. He said police are still pursuing them.

Mwandoe identified the arrested suspect as George Onsare, a tout in Kisii town.

The deceased was identified as Thomas Abuya from Etago in South Mugirango constituency. The body was removed to Nyamira County Referral Hospital Mortuary.

Mwandoe said the suspect will be arraigned before a court and charged with murder once investigations are complete.
