Nyamira MCAs have endorsed a motion by George Nyakundi MCA Rigoma Ward that calls upon the county government to provide civic education on matters of justice and legal affairs.

According to George the local residents at times fear to testify in court when called upon after witnessing incidents due to lack of civic education on justice and legal affairs.

He said because of lack of information, civic education will help them to know procedures that are to be followed when someone found himself or herself in that situation.

He said that people should be sensitized on how to handle such cases when they fall in as victims because other people fear to face even the authorities.

More than 75% of the members fully supported the motion saying that sometimes the witnesses fear to testify adding that civic education will help them to know that they are safe while testifying.

“The community should also be told how to approach the right people when they are in such cases so that justice can be done,” he said.

They noted that the police officers sometimes are to blame because the procedures they are following are too expensive and bureaucratic making the victims to lose hope.

They urged the police to treat people fairly when they need their help because the residents depends on them instead of frustrating hence, ending up losing hope.
