Kiambu women rep Anne Nyokabi has raised concerns over the rising cases of alcoholism among teachers in the county.

The women rep said that cases of teachers abusing alcohol in schools are high and have resulted to poor education standards.

Speaking to journalists in Thika Town on Friday, the women rep alleged that 30% of teachers in Kiambu are alcoholics.

Nyokabi said that statistics are worrying and called for intervention from relevant authorities.

“It is shocking that alcoholism is high among teachers, people whom we have given the mandate to educate our children,” she said.

Nyokabi noted that cases of teachers molesting and defiling children are as a result of alcoholism.

The women rep said that education standards in the county will remain in shambles unless something is done urgently.

She asked the Ministry of Education and relevant stakeholders to take action against such teachers before the situation gets out of hand.

Kiambu County education director Bonficae Gitau said that appropriate measures are being taken to address the issue.

He said that a large percentage of teachers in the county are alcoholics.

“It is indeed true that alcoholism among teachers is a grave issue. Counsellors will be deployed to over 900 primary schools and secondary schools to help teachers who are addicted to alcohol," said Gitau.
