Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Hassan Abdi has asked officers in the Registration of Persons department in the region to thoroughly vet applicants of national identity cards to avoid registering aliens.
Speaking in his office on Thursday, Abdi directed all village elders, chiefs and their assistants to ensure that people who are registered to get IDs are well known to them and that they are from their areas.
He said illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries have received the crucial document after bribing registration officials thus endangering the security of Uasin Gishu residents.
"I direct village elders, chief and their assistants to ensure that the registration is done professionally and transparently to avoid cases where aliens are given IDs and thereafter committing dangerous crimes. Any officer found liaising with aliens to give them identity cards will face the law," he said.
He further urged residents who have attained the age of 18 and over and who don’t have IDs to apply for them since it is their right as enshrined in the constitution.
