One person died on the spot and another was seriously injured when the motorcycle they riding lost control and hit a lorry from behind.
This was at Landless in Thika East along Garissa Road on Thursday morning.
According an eyewitness, Dickson Gitau, the bodaboda was speeding and tried to overtake the lorry ferrying sand towards the Muguga side when the truck slowed down. The motorcycle hit it from behind.
The injured man who was the passenger on the motorcycle was rushed to Thika Level Five Hospital and is in critical condition.
Confirming the incident, Thika East OCPD Daniel Chacha who arrived first at the scene said the rider died on the spot.
He said that motorcycle accidents are becoming a serious problem as most of the riders are not trained and thus do not adhere to the traffic rules and regulations. The officer said that the police were conducting raids to edge out un-roadworthy motorcycles and vehicles from the road but they always come back once they pay fines and are released.
He warned that those found breaking the traffic rules would be dealt with severely and advised members of public who wish to ride on the motorcycles to be supplied with helmet and other protective gears.
The deceased’s body was taken to General Kago Morgue in Thika Town.
Area MCA Gerishon Ngigi, speaking from the scene promised to take charge of the medical bill for the injured passenger as well as help in the funeral arrangements of the deceased.
Ngigi cautioned the youths operating the bodaboda business to take caution while riding to reduce accidents that are becoming numerous.
