School girls from Ratta Secondary on Wednesday got an opportunity to interact with Oscar award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o in a mentorship session organised by Safaricom Foundation.

The more than 150 girls at the institution had a first-hand encounter with Lupita as she candidly narrated her journey to being a Hollywood star.

Lupita challenged the girls to follow their dreams and not allow their current circumstances define them in a way.

“You may be facing numerous challenges at home-your parents may be poor, you could be living with unsupportive relatives or you may feel alone in this world. Do not let this define you or your future. You were created to achieve more and to be the best the world can have,” advised Lupita.

Safaricom Foundation Chairman, Joseph Ogutu said, “This mentorship programme aims to build ambition, spur self-confidence and challenge the girls here to discover and fulfil their potential.”

Safaricom Foundation has previously funded the construction of a girl’s hostel at the institution aimed at increasing girls’ retention in schools.

Safaricom Foundation partners with Kenyan communities, organisations and institutions to improve and transform lives. With a footprint in all of Kenya’s 47 counties, and a strong history of partnerships dating back to our inception in 2003.

Ogutu said the Safaricom Foundation has worked with speed, simplicity and trust to implement over 1,000 community projects, impacting more than 3 million people through their thematic areas of health, education, environmental conservation, economic empowerment, water, disaster relief, and arts and culture.

He added that the three-year-strategy which runs from April 2014 to March 2017 will build on strong history of results and partnerships will contribute towards vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
