Yatta Sub-County director of education has announced that the government will close down more than 20 private schools in the area as they do not meet the expected standards.
Speaking on Friday in Mutuu Town, Elikana Nyaga said many private schools in the area do not adhere to the terms and conditions of a school setting.
“Many private schools are located either near bars or at the owners’ residential areas, which is not in line with the laws and regulations of the education sector,” said Nyaga.
According to the District County Commissioner Allan Machari, private schools owners had been called for several meetings to discuss ways of improving the conditions of their schools but had been uncooperative hence the need for the strict measures.
“The Yatta Sub-County Committee has decided to close down over 20 private Schools by the end of this year due to ignorance by the owners. The quality of education cannot be good when students learn in a noisy environment near bars. Both secondary and primary schools located in such areas will be shut down and will not open in the beginning of next year,” said Machari.
The commissioner also pointed out that an investigation was ongoing to ensure the teachers who have been employed in the said schools are qualified.
