Over 500 residents of Nyamaiya Ward, Nyamira County turned up on Sunday at Mang’ong’o Primary School for free medical screening.

The event was organised by Nyamira Youth Senate in collaboration with the county government.

Residents were given expert treatment on cervical cancer, jigger treatment, eye screening and dental screening as a way of giving back to the society.

Speaking during the event, Chairman Jason Mogire said the exercise will be carried out in all the twenty wards in Nyamira with five wards targeted every month.

He urged residents to turn up in large numbers by avoiding till the situation escalates making it difficult for a family to contribute towards treatment.

“This is a free medical screening exercise and we are targeting all the twenty wards," he said.

"Hopefully, we will be able to do five wards per month and in four months’ time all will be well. Let us not wait till a situation escalates. We have to be preventive on matters medical complications."

He urged area leaders to desist from persistent politicking and support the course as a way of reaching the electorates.

“Our county is always in the campaign mood and that really disturbs," he said.

"It will be necessary if our leaders join hands to support such a course. 2017 is far and politics should come when the right time comes,” added Mogire.

The Nyamira County government provided free transport and lunch for volunteers many of them members of the youth senate who gave their services.
