Traffic police in Juja are holding three trucks which were arrested for overloading and allegedly causing the collapse of a bridge in Juja Farm, on Friday evening.
The trucks which were transporting building materials among other things are alleged to have caused the incident at around 5 pm forcing other vehicles using the bridge to divert to other roads which are in bad condition.
Juja officer commanding the police station (OCS) David Kombe, who arrived at the scene immediately, said police officers will be on the lookout to ensure no heavy commercial vehicle is overloading.
Kombe noted that the traffic department in the area has been accused of receiving bribes from truck drivers leaving them to pass without using the Juja weighbridge. He said stern action will be taken against any person engaging in the illegal activity on the road.
Area Member of Parliament Francis Munyua launched the reconstruction of the bridge so that normal transport operations resume on the road. The road is used for transporting farm produce including milk from Juja Farm.
The MP cautioned lorry drivers against overloading saying that they risk causing accidents on the bridges in the area as they are not made to withstand overloaded vehicles.
Munyua said plans are underway to construct a modern bridge to enhance transport in the area.
