The Parliament of Kenya for the first time placed its stand at the Kisumu Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) show which officially opens on Wednesday.

Speaking to this writer at the Kisumu's Mamboleo ASK show grounds, Parliament of Kenya Public Communication officer Dorcas Ambuto said Parliament wants to reach out to the public and get to understand how parliament works.

"To understand their role as provided by Article 119 which says the public is supposed to be participating in decision making and petition parliament on issues of concern," said Ambuto.

Officer Ambuto said most of the time members of the public do not participate in the formation of bills, but react later on final stages of the bills.

"When bills are passed, that's when NGOs mobilise members of the public telling them that some laws are bad, then they go to the streets without understanding what such laws are about, such perceptions is what we want deal with," said Ambuto.

She said that through ASK show, the public get informed and encouraged to comment on the bills being formulated.

"We are at the show to pledge our solidarity with the farmers since agriculture is the backbone of the country's economy," said Parliament of Kenya communication officer.

Ambuto said with the stand they can collect views best to help the agriculture fraternity. She said that Parliament is at the forefront to ensure farmers embrace technology that is helpful to them.

"Sometimes technology that comes from outside is harmful, Parliament can come to regulate the technology acquired," said Ambuto.

The Parliament of Kenya has had it stands in ASK shows in Kakamega, Embu, Meru and Nakuru.
