Police in Naivasha have called on factory managements to ensure their vehicles; especially trucks and lorries are roadworthy and mechanically fit before being allowed to ferry goods to different destinations.
Speaking at an accident scene on Friday evening along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway where several PSVs and private vehicles were damaged when a truck belonging to a flower company lost its brakes, swerving side to side before plunging into a ditch, Naivasha OCPD Titus Munyoki blamed factories of employing less qualified personnel to inspect their vehicles.
According to Munyoki, the accident could be avoided if the truck had been fitted with the necessary worn out parts to facilitate the heavy weight that usually characterise them.
“Factories should always ensure their vehicles are mechanically scrutinised before partaking on any official duty because anything can happen while on transit,” he told reporters.
He singled out several occasions where factory trucks have been involved in accidents in along the major highway due to complications as a result of mechanical problems.
“A simple mishap can endanger the lives of hundreds of people using the road that is why we always advise drivers to be sure about their vehicles before engaging on long distances,” noted the police boss.
The truck, two vehicles and a motorcycle that were damaged were towed to Naivasha police station awaiting a report from the county vehicle inspection unit to ascertain if they were all compliant to be on the road at the time of the accident.
The OCPD further took to task the traffic department in ensuring that all unroadworthy vehicles are wiped out of the road to help cases of the increasing number of accidents along major roads in the county.
The traffic department has a special team that specifically deals with government, parastatal and factory vehicles.
