Police in Juja on Thursday arrested three pick-pocketing suspects who were accused of robbing from accident casualties in the area.
According to Thika traffic base commander Apelles Chacha, the three were caught in the act of stealing from the victims of the Weighbridge accident. She said they were pretending to be good Samaritans retrieving the bodies and helping the casualties to the hospital.
Five people died in the mid morning accident involving a Kenya Mpya bus and a truck ferryin sand. One person died immediately on arrival to the hospital.
Chacha said that she arrived at the scene some minutes after the accident and noted with concern the accident cause was an overloaded lorry and a speeding bus that had also overloaded.
She added that the police have been able to contain the situation at the Thika road and operations have resumed to normal. She also stated that they are getting information that there is an approximate number of 18 people in hospital and are receiving medical attention as others move to other hospitals.
She cautioned the traffic police that are taking bribes and clearing the overloaded lorries to pass through the weighbridge that they have no space on the station as they are to blame for the misfortune.
The suspects are being held in Thika Police Station.
