Thika traffic police base commander Apelle Chacha has told drivers of public service vehicles (PSV) to adhere to traffic rules to avoid accidents which he said had become rampant in the constituency.
Chacha raised concern over the recklessness at which PSV drivers pick and drop off passengers without due regard to other road users.
He told matatus to adhere to traffic rules to minimise accidents in the area.
His warning comes in the wake of several grisly road accidents which have occurred in Thika town due to reckless driving thereby killing innocent lives.
The latest fatal accident happened on Friday at Blue Post in Thika in which eight people died while 46 others were injured. The accident involved a PSV bus by the name Kenya Mpya and a saloon car.
Chacha revealed that most accidents occur in the evenings especially from 6pm to 10pm thus called on drivers to be careful at such times.
Chacha who was speaking in his office at the weekend called upon residents to speak out in case of reckless driving.
At the same time, the traffic boss urged passengers to stick to traffic rules by also waiting for matatus at bus bays. He advised pedestrians in the central business district to always use traffic lights when crossing the road.
He said that majority of people who are affected by reckless driving are pedestrians and asked them to cooperate in stemming the vice.
