A middle aged man impersonating a police officer in Kiambu town on Thursday escaped death narrowly after members of the public beat him up.
The man, who was only identified as ‘mrefu’, was cornered by members of the public in Kiambu town while demanding for bribes from motorists while posing as a security officer.
He was beaten senseless before he was rescued by two police officers from Kiambu Police Station who later locked him up. The irate mob had vowed to lynch him. They kept on milling around the police station threatening to storm and flush him out. The crowd was later dispersed by the officers on sensing impending danger.
The suspect, according to eyewitnesses, has been terrorising locals especially at night while posing as a police officer. He has been working with two other men. They have been carrying out door to door searches at night and demanding identity cards from their victims.
Kiambu OCPD Stephen Ng'etich warned locals against falling prey to people masquerading as police officers.
He told residents to demand identification documents to authenticate the true identity of people claiming to be police offices.
