Four police officers were on Tuesday arraigned before a Mombasa Court charged with aiding the escape of a drug suspect from police custody.

Justus Titus Sangalo, Ahmed Shabaan Saney, David Kipkurui Koskei and Joseph Maina Machoya are being accused of aiding Richard Wachira Maranga to escape from lawful custody at Makupa Police Station.

Maranga is a suspected drug peddler who was arrested by police officers during the crackdown on drug barons in Mombasa County.

The prosecution told the court that Maranga, who was being held at Makupa Police Station, escaped from police custody and is still at large.

Maranga had been arrested on Friday and he was found in possession of 67 sachets of heroin and 50 grammes of bhang.

The four accused persons, however, denied the charges. Through their lawyer Mr Jarred Magolo, they pleaded to be released on bond.

In his application, Magolo argued that his clients are entitled to bail or bond as stipulated in the constitution.

Senior Resident Magistrate Irene Ruguru granted their request and released the four on a Sh20,000 bond each. The case will be heard on December 8.
