Drama unfolded in Corner One are in Kiganjo, Kiambu County on Thursday after a man who had posed as bodaboda passenger allegedly tried to steal the motorbike.
The man who escaped death by a whisker after he was beaten mercilessly by boda boda riders, is said to have been ferried from BAT junction to Kiganjo and gave Sh500 to the motorbike rider to deduct his fare.
The incident occurred when the rider, Jackson Musyoka, went to look for the balance at a nearby shop, leaving the passenger behind. The man is said to have tried to escape with the motorbike whose engine was still on.
"Were it not that he fell into a ditch some few metres from where we had stopped to look for the balance, he could have fled," said Musyoka.
"My colleagues who saw him trying to escape blocked him," he added.
Kiganjo Boda Boda Association Chairman Patrick Muiruri said that such cases have been on the rise in the area especially at night.
"We have been urging our members to be extra careful because you do not know who your passenger is," he said.
The man was rescued by Makongeni Police Station officers and is expected to be arraigned in court on Friday.
