A middle-age man on Tuesday escaped the wrath of angry people at Afraha stadium during Mashujaa Day celebrations after he tried to snatch a phone from an elderly woman who was making her way to the main dais.
It took the intervention of police officers to avert the situation with the crowd baying for his blood. A majority accused the suspect of taking advantage of the situation to steal from patriotic citizens.
“What became of our youth? Today is a day we are celebrating people who made sure Kenya is where it is today because of their selfless deeds. What could be the situation if our forefathers behaved this way?” wondered Njoroge Wa Murugu.
The young man who was locked up in a police van before being taken to Afraha police post was left bleeding profusely from the nose after being clobbered by some people who could not control their anger.
“Hope the governor will talk about insecurity because it is a real issue in different estates where young boys are freely pouncing on the elders like nobody cares,” offered Mary Muthoni.
She said her son had become a notorious pickpocket in town due to peer pressure and bad influence.
Thousands of residents from all walks of life across the county turned up to commemorate Mashujaa Day, a day set aside to celebrate Kenyans whose deeds are worth recognising.
