Business operators in Maseno were left counting loses on Tuesday following an electricity power surge that led to destruction of several property.
The power surge which was caused by unknown issue left salon operators, barbers, hoteliers and other business calculating losses rather than profits.
Machines in salons and barber shops were rendered useless the same as lights, electronic equipments and fridges in other affected businesses.
A total of seven premises were affected including a salon and barber shop, two fast food joints and four shops.
Speaking to this writer, the affected people said they are incapacitated by the damage considering that their premises were their main source of income.
“This salon is all I have to support my family and the important equipment which is the blow drier has been destroyed and currently I do not have any money to buy a new one," said Grace Okwiri, a salon operator.
Hotel owners and shop attendants who were affected raised concerns that food might go bad considering that they depended on the blown up fridges to preserve food and drinks such as milk and soda.
According to the affected business people, electricity supply in the area was constantly interrupted on Monday. They said the Kenya Power should have done more to avert the problem before the damage.
“If we had been notified that there is going to be constant power interruption then we could have put in place mechanisms to ensure our equipment remained safe,” said David Okore, business person in the area.
The affected people have vowed to visit the power supplier offices in Kisumu to seek compensation for the destroyed property because they feel it was not their fault.
