Nakuru National Land Commission (NLC) County officer Mr Frank Kimbelekenye has warned private investors against moving into lands reserved for airports.

Speaking on Thursday in Mbaruk-Eburru constituency, Mr Kimbelekenye also called on the county leadership in collaboration with the County Land Management Board to come up and protect public land.

"We want to clearly inform everybody that this is public land, we will not allow any individual to encroach into it because this is meant to serve the public," he said.

The NLC official also warned private developers who were invading and subdividing the 800 acre public land in pipeline along Nakuru-Nairobi highway to stop with immediate effect challenging relevant authority to courageously come up and survey and subdivide the land.

"We have also asked these people to come and survey and subdivide this land and tell the commission what they know and what they are aware of," he added.

Residents around Mbaruk-Eburru have since complained about the manner in which the land was being subdivided which has enabled private developers to grab their land.

Several leaders also condemned the act including area MCA Jane Munga and the angry local residents who also expressed their disappointment with how the public land was being allocated.

Ms Munga said that should the land be found not suitable for the construction of an airport according to National Environment Management Authority's report, then Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has a responsibility to invite the public and share the views rather than allow private developers to settle in the land.

"It is unfortunate to hear that NEMA’s environmental impact assessment report does not support the construction of an airport in this area because it is a migratory pathway for flamingos from Lake Nakuru. However the public should be invited in getting way forward for the public land use," Ms Munga added.
