Speaking to the residents at Suneka estate in Kisii County, Maina Nyambuti, a Kenya Power official, said consumers can regulate electricity usage and therefore bills by using the pre-paid system.

"You can buy tokens any time at roughly Sh10 per unit thus you can know how to rate your usage," Mr Nyambuti said.

The residents gained a lot of knowledge pertaining electricity connectivity and payments.

Payment of electricity bills can now be done through Mpesa, Airtel money, in Kenya Power offices and through banks.

"I have used these metres since I built these rental houses and I have never regretted installing them. My tenants too have never complained," James Nyakano, a landlord said.

The residents however complained about power outages, especially during the rainy seasons.
