Opposition leader Raila Odinga has defended ODM Nairobi County branch chairman George Aladwa over an alleged hate speech he made during a rally held in Kibra on Mashujaa Day.
Raila said Aladwa's name is "being dragged into politics by his political opponents" adding that he was innocent.
“Aladwa has done nothing wrong to provoke public outcry," said Raila.
Aladwa has been widely condemned by the public for utterances he made at the Kibera rally with politicians mainly from the ruling Jubilee coalition calling for his prosecution.
His address according to a video circulating on social media directs at creation of chaos come 2017 general elections.
He is also heard saying that some people will have to die if the elections are stolen in Raila's disfavour.
Aladwa has however, said his statement was misinterpreted since he meant that Raila's supporters will die of joy if the opposition leader won the election.
Speaking on Thursday in Thika during the funeral of wife of a freedom fighter Gitu wa Kahengeri, Raila urged politicians to stop mudslinging their political rivals to gain political mileage.
“Politicians should not play cheap politics to their rival politicians to earn public favours," said Raila.
Aladwa was arrested on Friday morning at the Railways Club in Nairobi by officers from the Criminal Investigations Directorate and taken to Kilimani police station for questioning.
Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko had ordered the CID to investigate the utterances made by Aladwa who was later released by the High Court on a Sh20,000 cash bail.
