A 34-year-old man was on Wednesday arraigned before a Kisumu court facing charges of allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl.

Bramwel Okumu, however, denied the charges before Kisumu Chief Magistrate Catherine Owino for the offence he is alleged to have committed in June 20 this year.

The court heard that the accused who is a businessman based in Kisumu allegedly raped the girl in his premises on the said date after buying her a mobile phone.

Okumu who runs a bookshop in Kisumu, is said to have been discovered by his wife who notified the girl’s mother about what had happened.

The matter was reported to police after the girl was taken for treatment and ascertained that she had been raped. The prosecution, however, sought time extension to complete investigations.

In his defence, the accused told the court they had sexual intercourse because the girl was willing and not forced as presented by the prosecution.

However the prosecution said that it is against the law to engage in sexual intercourse with anybody below 18 years old, whether they are willing or not. He was remanded in custody until next week Thursday when he will make a formal bail application.
