Women in Kibera have been advised to not only form groups but also register them so that they can save their monies as a group for easy and quick profits.

Speaking to slum women who attended a prize-giving ceremony at Jamhuri Primary School on Friday, an official at Kibra huduma Centre Kennedy Akoko told women to come together and form self-help groups to boost their incomes.

"Many of you women are depending on your spouses to feed you and your children, clothe you and give you other basic needs. You do not need to be so dependent in the current world. You have a lot of opportunities to make your own money. The solution is for you to come together, form  self-help groups, and start sharing information by holding meetings," said Akoko.

"From the information or ideas you are sharing, you can easily get a project that when tried, can be a money-making business. Such projects will be supported by the government under the Ministry of Devolution," he added.

Akoko, however, advised husbands to give their wives some time to attend chamas because they are very educative and a good way for socialising which later gives rise to good ideas.

He said if the ideas are well cultivated can lead to an improved lifestyle.

He also said the groups should be registered so that members can be considered by the State in case any help is to be given to boost their chama business.
