Farmers in Nyamira County will receive low cost fertiliser beginning September, the county government announced on Wednesday.
Governor John Nyagarama said the farm input will be given to large scale growers in preparation for the planting season early 2016.
“Farming is the core business in this area and that is why the county government is determined to see farmers excel. We have finalised on the program that will see farmers pick fritters from authorised shop at a subsidised prices,” he said.
"This will not be a program for all farmers. We are targeting people who are doing farming in a large scale, but in future we are going to incorporate peasant farmers because they are also an integral part of the economy."
He said farmers will be buying the fertilisers from authorised centres by paying half the market price in a bid to make farming cheap.
He said small holder farmers will get a chance to benefit from the programme starting next year.
Nyagarama was speaking at the county government ground in the county.
