Residents of Ruiru have been warned against crossing the busy Thika super highway without using flyovers as it is an offence and also jeopardises lives.
This was after 16 members of the public were arrested for not using the flyovers and risking their lives crossing the busy highway.
On Saturday, a 35 year old woman was hit by a fast moving matatu along the highway and died on the spot.
Speaking to the press on Monday, Ruiru OCPD SSP Isaac Thuranira said that over 15 people have lost their lives on the highway in the past 6 months, saying the trend is alarming.
He said that most members of the public commit the offence due to ignorance and being in a hurry, forgetting that their lives are more important.
Mr Thuranira confirmed that 16 people were arrested this morning for not using the flyover and instead crossing the road just under the flyover.
He also accused such people of vandalising road signs and other road barriers as they step on them.
The police boss said the crackdown will continue to quell loss of lives.
He also said that matatu operators should ensure they alight passengers at official bus terminus and not in the middle of the highway as they promote this offence.
"I am sending a warning to all members of the public who cross the busy highway instead of using the flyovers. Police are on the look out and all those breaking the law will be prosecuted," warned Mr Thuranira.
