Nyamira residents have benefited from a free cancer screening from volunteers from a US non-governmental organisation known as Jumpstart in conjunction with Nyamira government.

According to Jumpstart Coordinator Helen Reno they have screened over 600 people and they expect to screen more by the end of Thursday. The screening started on Wednesday.

She said so far, out of the 600 people screened, there are 20 people who have already been diagnosed with early signs of the disease.

“We have given them the right guidance and those found with early stages symptoms which can see them get treatment easily,” said Reno.

The coordinator of the screening programme in a press brief on Thursday said those found with the symptoms had been referred for specialised treatment and check up in various hospitals.

A clinical officer from Nyamira Hospital Edwin Abuga thanked residents for turning out in large numbers and cooperation they have given to the visiting nurses.

Abuga urged residents to regularly go for cancer screening, terming the disease as deadly compared to many diseases nowadays.

The exercise was taking place at Nyamira Hospital.
