Residents of Kithangani location now want the location and neighbouring areas declared arid.

They said the area experiences extremely hot and dry weather making farming nearly impossible.

They said farming had become difficult as a result of harsh weather.

The residents who spoke to this reporter said the aridity in the area had contributed to the location's underdevelopment.

The harsh weather, they also said, had made many school going children to abandon studies because of hunger.

Daniel Silu, a resident from the location appealed to well wishers to offer help to residents through food aid.

"We lack food for our children and are forced to take them with us to the sand harvesting mines to earn a livng," Silu said.

"If they can introduce a feeding program to schools, we can take the children to school without fail."

Kithangani chief Edrick Kimata at a public meeting held on Tuesday acknowledged that the area was dry and called for humanitarian assistance.

Kithangani is among areas in Ukambani adversely affected by dry weather.
