Borabu residents turned up in large numbers at Menyenya Secondary School to register as voters following an exercise that was organised by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials in conjunction with local leadership.

The exercise targets at least 10,000 people who are eligible to vote but had not registered with the commission.

Speaking on Wednesday during the exercise, Nyamira County IEBC head of operations Mr James Onyango, said most area residents were against the idea of visiting the commission’s offices for registration and instead opted for the mobile registration services.

“We are targeting at least 10,000 new voters from the constituency to increase the current number which stands at 38, 0000. Most locals are against the idea of visiting our constituency offices for registration and opt for mobile services,” said Onyango.

He said the commission will continue conducting the exercise in the other constituencies in the county and urged politicians to work together with his group to ensure the exercise yield fruits.

“We will be holding such mobile services in all the four constituencies because people are not coming to seek for services in our offices. It will also be effective if local politicians mobilise the residents to register as voters,” he said.

Nyansiongo MCA John Mogusu urged residents to show up in large numbers and lauded the IEBC for its determination to ensure locals were registered in large numbers.

“Voting is a constitutional right and anybody who posses an ID should ensure he or she is registered. IEBC is doing a good job and we hope many more will be reached to achieve the set target,” he said.
