Retired teachers from Gusii region have come under immense scrutiny after an education officer from Kitutu Masaba constituency accused them of dragging institutions behind by waging endless wars on serving teachers.

Speaking on Monday during the retirement of Nyamotenenio primary school headteacher, Mr Nelson Mwaniki, Mr Robert Obiria accused retired teachers of allegedly participating in endless intrigues with administrations of institutions in the neighbourhood once they retire.

He urged them to act as role models by acting as a bridge between teachers and parents in a bid to boost education standards in the region.

“I have been receiving quite discouraging reports from teachers on the role of their retired counterparts. They have been associated with constant intrigues we hear in our institutions and this is never good news for the education standards. They should serve as good ambassadors and that will be helping us improve on education,” he said.

He, however, urged school managements to select them to various school boards as a way of appreciating their immense skills and experience.

“I really don’t want to hear our teachers been associated with all manner of negative things. This is the right time for the community to absorb them to various advisory boards to curb the situation. I believe they have enough experience,” he added.

Mr Mwaniki agreed with the education officer and called upon his colleagues to act as good ambassadors by supporting institutions.

“Retirement doesn’t mean that we are no longer teachers. We should be always ready to embrace positive contribution to the society,” he said.
