Residents of Chulaimbo in Kisumu County have expressed concern over the recklessness exhibited by bodaboda operators in the area.

They said the operators were endangering their lives due to their reckless riding, considering that bodaboda is the most common mode of transport in the area.

They alleged that some of the operators no longer observe traffic rules, something which was worrying them.

The locals said their pleas to the riders to transform have fallen on deaf ears and appealed to the police to crack down on rogue elements.

“They ride the motorbikes at high speeds even where there are many people. We don’t know what is motivating them to engage in high speed riding,” said one of the residents, Michael Okwele.

It is alleged that the number of riders has been increasing, which many attribute to school drop outs joining the business.

They said majority of the culprits flouting traffic rules were the youthful riders, some of who have never been to any driving school.

Some of the operators, they added, do not wear helmets and reflector jackets.

“You will find that a person takes about a day to learn how to ride a motorbike, then the next day you will see him on the road carrying passengers, this is not right at all,” said Reuben Ochieng.
