Prostitutes in Chepilat township will soon be rehabilitated after residents raised funds towards the initiative.
This follows reports that the town was experiencing cases of young girls engaging in prostitution to sustain themselves.
The revelation did not go down well with the residents.
Led by Seventh Day Adventist Chapilat pastor Simon Nyanchieo on Wednesday, the residents said the project will prevent the escalation of the crisis and help uphold morality.
They urged the political leadership to help expedite the process of building a rehabilitation centre for the sex workers.
“The town is rapidly growing and the number of people engaging in prostitution is also worrying," he said.
"As a church and community, we had to take the initiative and help uphold morality by rehabilitating our children who are engaging in the sinful activity. We are also expecting to create employment for counselors and that is why we need help from political leadership."
Mr Nyachieo said the centre will also be empowered to offer various technical skills that will enable those rehabilitated to find better income generating activities.
“We are also optimistic that the center will be able to offer technical skills that will enable those rehabilitated to find alternative source of income. We already have a land for the purpose and we only need to rise more money,” Nyanchieo added.
During the event, Sh250,000 was raised with the area MCA Alfayo Ngeresa promising a personal donation of Sh100,000.
